300 million euro contract: Protected medical facilities for the German Armed Forces

The German Armed Forces is investing in highly mobile medical facilities from Rheinmetall: as part of a major order worth more than €300 million, new Role 2B systems are to be delivered from 2029 onwards, enabling life-saving emergency surgery to be performed directly at the front line. The first system is intended to strengthen the operational readiness of the Lithuanian Brigade and provide state-of-the-art military medical technology directly at a possible front line.

Rheinmetall has been awarded a contract by the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) to supply NATO Role 2B-level protected medical facilities to the German armed forces. The framework agreement, which was already concluded in September 2025, is worth over €300 million in the first call-off and runs until 2040.

Implementation will be carried out by Rheinmetall Project Solutions GmbH, which specialises in complex logistical and medical systems. Two years ago, the Rheinmetall subsidiary was awarded the contract to supply modular medical facilities (MSE) for the German Armed Forces. These are part of the 120 rescue stations, some of which are protected and some unprotected, also to be supplied by Rheinmetall.

Mobile medical facilities for Lithuania

The newly ordered mobile medical facilities are primarily intended for use by the German brigade in Lithuania and will, for the first time, enable intensive medical care to be provided directly in combat zones. Each Role 2B unit consists of eleven armoured vehicles equipped with multifunctional containers that serve as operating, treatment and monitoring units.

Military HX trucks from Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles are used here, which impress with their high off-road capability, reliability and ballistic protection. Thanks to their modular design, the armoured medical facilities can be quickly relocated, set up and made ready for use.

Closing the capability gap in medical services

The system is designed to close a critical capability gap in the Bundeswehr’s medical support and enables immediate care for the seriously injured in the field. ‘This allows us to provide our soldiers on the ground with the best possible medical care,’ explained Dr Deniz Akitürk, Managing Director of Rheinmetall Project Solutions GmbH.

The contract is considered an important milestone in the modernisation of the Bundeswehr’s medical services. The highly mobile Role 2B systems will adapt the medical care provided to the land forces to the requirements of modern national and alliance defence. No other NATO member country currently has a comparable, protected system of this kind.
