DiMiMED: ZOLL showcases mobile solutions for ventilation and infusion

At the DiMiMED conference in Koblenz, ZOLL presented medical technology for mobile use. The focus was on a new, flexible infusion manager and a compact oxygen supply solution, both of which were developed specifically for military and emergency medical scenarios.

ZOLL used this year’s DiMiMED in Koblenz to present innovations in the field of mobile emergency medicine. The aim of the presentation was to show emergency services personnel in the military environment powerful, easily transportable devices that enable patients to be treated even under difficult conditions.

SAROS 4000 – Mobile oxygen generation

The centrepiece of the trade fair presentation was a mobile ventilation system that allows reliable oxygenation independent of location-based infrastructure – the SAROS 4000 Portable Oxygen Concentrator. The system replaces conventional oxygen cylinders, which could pose a danger in unstable military environments.

With its compact design, robust construction and intuitive operation, the solution is specially designed to meet the requirements of emergency medical personnel and rescue workers in a military context. This ensures a reliable oxygen supply even in remote regions.

AutoSAT technology ensures constant oxygen saturation, while pulse flow and continuous flow modes allow flexible adaptation to patient care. Oxygen is filtered from the ambient air and supplied to the patient in compressed form.

Technical data of the SAROS 4000

  • Oxygen production: 000 ml/min
  • Oxygen concentration: 93% ± 3% at all flow settings
  • Operating modes:
    • Continuous flow: 1, 2, 3 LPM
    • Pulse flow: 16, 32, 48, 64, 80, 96 ml bolus
  • Trigger sensitivity: 0.15–0.45 cm H₂O (adjustable)
  • Battery life:
    • 45 min at 2 LPM continuous
    • 1.1 hours at 32 ml pulse flow
  • Weight: 5.56 kg with battery / 4.54 kg without battery
  • Dimensions: 68.1 cm x 11.1 cm (with battery)
  • Operating temperature: 0 °C to 40 °C

Another noteworthy feature is Tactical Mode, which can deactivate visual and audible alarms during use – a decisive advantage in tactical situations.

Sapphire – precise administration of medication

As a second new product, ZOLL presented a military infusion pump that enables flexible therapies almost anywhere. Sapphire was developed by Eitan Medical and is distributed exclusively by ZOLL. The system is designed to administer fluids and medication precisely – regardless of whether the patient is in a clinic, a field hospital or directly in the trenches. Particular emphasis was placed on ease of use and rapid deployment.

Its flexible applicability is particularly noteworthy: the Sapphire supports a wide range of infusion therapies, including continuous, intermittent PCA and TPN applications. The colour touchscreen display is intuitive to use – even with gloves on – and makes it easier to operate under stressful conditions. With up to seven hours of battery life and military standard certification, the Sapphire is a robust, versatile solution for modern emergency medicine.

Technical data for the Sapphire

  • Therapies: Volumetric infusion, PCA (patient-controlled analgesia), continuous, intermittent and TPN infusions
  • Flow rate: 0.1 to 999 ml/h
  • Accuracy: ± 2.5%
  • Database: contains up to 1,000 medications and 40 clinical care areas
  • Display: colour touchscreen, operable with gloves
  • Weight: 418 g
  • Dimensions: 14.3 cm (W) x 9.6 cm (H) x 4.9 cm (D)
  • Battery: up to 24 hours of operation at 125 ml/h,
  • charging time: 6 hours
  • Operating temperature: 5 °C to 40 °C
  • Certification: IEC 60601-1-12 for military use, even under harsh environmental conditions

With this product portfolio at DiMiMED, ZOLL entered into dialogue with users and experts. Medical technology solutions for military use pose particular challenges. ZOLL is addressing these challenges. The combination of robust technology, mobility and efficiency will enable medical personnel to save lives under extreme conditions even more effectively in the future.
