Danish software company Systematic has completed the development phase of SitaWare Battlefield Health and delivered the software to the German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr) as planned. The system will serve as the foundation of SAFES (Sanitätsdienstliches Führungs- und Einsatzsystem), the Bundeswehr’s medical command and control system, supporting the coordination of medical evacuations throughout operations.
The solution was demonstrated to the Bundeswehr Medical Command on 27 October, marking another milestone in the digitalisation of the German medical service. The programme was first announced in October 2025.
Part of the SitaWare ecosystem
SitaWare Battlefield Health is an add-on to the SitaWare Suite, the C5ISR software that NATO and more than 50 nations use to plan and manage military operations. The Bundeswehr plans to implement SitaWare across all domains. Battlefield Health adds a medical component to the Mission Enabling Service Bundeswehr (MESBw) software ecosystem, which is designed to support command and control at all levels. The software will use the Bundeswehr’s existing infrastructure and command and control systems.
Covering the entire tactical chain of evacuation
The solution covers the full tactical evacuation chain. At the tactical level, patients are documented at first contact, transport requests are handled and medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) missions are coordinated. At command level, emergency medical data, patient management and tracking are consolidated into a Recognized Medical Picture (RMedP). Integrated into the common operational picture, the RMedP provides information on resource requirements and availability and supports operational planning and reporting.

In practice, this supports continuity of care. Everyone involved, from the casualty collection point to admission to a Medical Treatment Facility, works from the same up-to-date information.
“In national and collective defence, the chain of evacuation decides whether the force can sustain itself. Coordinating it in the same system as tactical command is the result of a collaboration in which we worked on the solution together from the very start. That approach can be applied to other digitalisation programmes,” said Sven Trusch, Managing Director of Systematic’s German subsidiary.
Medical processes and modern digital command of operations will thus be closely linked. With SitaWare Battlefield Health, Systematic aims to strengthen emergency medical care for soldiers in line with the demands of national and collective defence.
