Prepared for emergencies: German Armed Forces and civilian partners train the continuous rescue chain

As part of the QUADRIGA 2026 exercise cluster, the German Armed Forces will conduct the Medic Quadriga exercise in March, the largest and most complex exercise of the medical service since the start of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. The aim of the exercise is to further strengthen the Bundeswehr’s operational readiness and responsiveness in the context of alliance defence, while at the same time testing and deepening close cooperation with civilian actors in the healthcare sector.

With QUADRIGA 2026, the Bundeswehr is combining several national exercise projects in order to credibly demonstrate its capabilities in all dimensions. A central component of this is the functionality of the medical rescue chain – from initial care for the wounded in the area of operations to further treatment in Germany.

What will be practised?

Medic Quadriga will be the first exercise to train the entire rescue chain in a realistic manner: from the site of injury in an operational area in Lithuania, to medical evacuation, to care in German hospitals by civilian partners. Together with the Air Force, the strategic transfer of wounded personnel from Lithuania to Germany will be practised – with medical care provided directly on board a MedEvac aircraft (Medical Evacuation).

The goal is always the rehabilitation of soldiers – back to duty. Around 1,000 soldiers are taking part in the exercise, including around 200 specially trained actors with realistically simulated injuries.

A temporary reception point (hub) for patients is being set up for this purpose at the ExpoCenterAirport at Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER). In the exercise scenario, this serves as a triage and distribution point for the onward transport of patients. Coordination is carried out in close cooperation with the states of Berlin and Brandenburg as well as civilian aid and rescue organisations.

No danger to the population

The Bundeswehr expressly points out that Medic Quadriga is a planned exercise. All injuries depicted are simulated. There is no danger to the population at any time. Visible military or medical activities, especially in the vicinity of BER Airport, are part of the exercise scenario and no cause for concern.

Civil-military cooperation as the key

The exercise emphasises that a functioning rescue chain in the event of an alliance can only be achieved through close cooperation between the Bundeswehr and civilian healthcare providers. This cooperation is an essential component of national resilience and demonstrates endurance in crisis and defence scenarios.
