Ionization is the name of any process in which one or more electrons are removed from an atom or molecule so that the atom or molecule remains as a positively charged ion.

In the process of bipolar ionization, the air is cleaned of pollutants based on nature's example. High voltage discharges, which occur naturally in the form of lightning bolts and which are artificially generated in bipolar ionization devices, are able to break down oxygen and water molecules in the air into positively and negatively charged ions.

These energetically excited ions strive to return to a stable state by reacting with other molecules. Here, pollutants in the air, in particular organic odor molecules, offer themselves as reaction partners, as a result of which these pollutants are gradually broken down into water and carbon dioxide. Germs such as molds and bacteria are also inhibited by the ions.

In addition, ozone, which is produced in small amounts that are harmless to the health of humans and animals during the high-voltage discharge, contributes to the breakdown of pollutants. Together with the aforementioned ions, they form a mixture called "activated oxygen" (with these devices, the voltage is so low that hardly any ozone is produced). Here, bipolar ionization has the decisive advantage of generating reactants for pollutants of both polarities. This means that a larger spectrum of pollutants can be broken down than with simple, negative ionization, which predominantly only reacts with pollutants of positive polarity.
